At Sarda Mines (P) Ltd. we measure our achievements through steps taken beyond statutory regulations for environment protection and sustainable livelihood. We not only care for the environment but also are passionately work towards continual improvement of it. 


The company has set up its own Environment Management Division Laboratory for the purpose of regular monitoring and mitigation of environmental parameters. Equipments include Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), Automatic Weather Monitoring System (AWMS), Air monitoring Kit-APM 550 & 460, Stack Monitoring Kit-VSS 1, Spectrophotometer, Turbidity Meter, BOD Incubators etc. We have employed M/s Cleenviron Pvt. Ltd. which is NABL Accredited and SPCB authorized party to conduct the day to day analysis.


We have developed an in-house nursery which was a significant move towards expanding our afforestation program. More than 2,00,000 saplings are being raised simultaneously to ferry the needs of different afforestation drives conducted each year

We have carried out very extensive afforestation both within and outside the Mines lease area in close association with Ministry of Environment & Forest, Bhubaneswar, Divisional Forest Officer, Keonjhar, and Odisha State Pollution Control Board. So far, about 3 lakh trees have been planted inside the mining lease area and about 2 lakh trees outside the leasehold area since inception.

Apart from regulatory plantation drives, nearly 86 species of some of the rarest of medicinal plants and herbs are being nurtured and maintained within our area. The importance of such plants is being demonstrated to the nearby villagers and they are being encouraged to grow such herbs in their houses.

A specialized technique called “Miyawaki Plantation” named after Professor Akira Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist and expert in plant ecology; has been adopted and pioneered for plantation over dump and other degraded areas. This specialized technique was accomplished in association with MoEF officials. This technique aims at planting upto 30 times more trees planted, as compared to conventional plantation techniques creating a completely maintenance free, fertilizer free wild and native forest after the first three years (guaranteed growth of at least 1 meter every year, in tree height) which sustains itself and supports local biodiversity.
Besides these, we have pioneered in tree transplantation method by Tree Transplanter (Make: Big John-USA). Saving mature specimen trees is of real value from aesthetics, instant gratification, and environmental impact a standpoint a total of 1917 nos of transplanted grown trees in different local species in the mined out block-04. The survival rate is 75 %.


For the dust suppression in and around the mines 8.3 km stretch of haul road has been facilitated with fixed water sprinklers. The frequency of sprinkling is once in 40 mins. Apart from these 12 nos of mobile water sprinklers varying in capacity from 10 to 25 kl are deployed. These water tankers run throughout the day on all haul roads, transportation roads and quarry benches.
Wet drilling method is practiced with the help of ROC L-8 drill machine to check fugitive dust emission. The blasting delay interval between the holes in intra row as practiced is 17 ms where the same between inter rows is 42 ms or more depending upon the number of rows and effective burden. This blasting design helps minimize fly rocks and less airborne dust. After blasting NIVIS-50 is deployed to suppress fugitive dust.

Advanced and effective dust control mechanism which includes Bag Filter System is employed for control of fugitive dust in the crusher. Each of the potential dust generation areas inside the crusher area (hoppers, discharge chutes, etc.) is provided with a water storage tank (20 KL capacity), pump, and set of pipelines, valves and strainers. A header connects each tank and multi-feeder lines branch out from the header. The feeder lines terminate at different material discharge points located in that zone. From these pressurized water in the form of fog is sprayed to suppress the fugitive dust.

A closed pipe conveyor spanning 1.8 km is commissioned to transport processed ore from mines premises to the Railway Siding. This unique technological masterpiece not only provides economic benefits but also huge intangible benefits. Savings of around 9000 Ltr/day in Diesel Consumption, 24000 Kg/day in CO2 Emissions, 300KW/Day in Electrical Energy enables forging a greener path for the generations to come


We use water from different sources and of different qualities, such as groundwater (water sourced from aquifers), surface water (water sourced from rivers). Absolutely zero effluent water is allowed to go outside the mining lease hold area.

A series of 14 nos of check dams have been constructed along the low lying steep slope areas to prevent the solid wash off to travel outside the mining lease. Rain water from the mine head is collected at the pit bottom and is allowed to filter into the ground water. A total of seven such facilities are available.

We advocate economical and efficient use of water in our mines. Industrial waste water containing oil & grease, flowing out from workshop, is routed through ETP (oil & water separator) so as to get the clear water conforming to the prescribed standards. This water is used for sprinkling and in nursery.

Nine Rainwater harvesting structures and five Sewerage Treatment plants punctuate our efforts of going beyond the norms and help protect the water environment. An effectual approach has led to the reduction in water intake per tonne of product.


Adequate measures are being taken for control of noise levels below 85 dBA in the work environment. Workers engaged in blasting and drilling operations, operations of Mining Machineries & Equipments etc. have been provided with ear plugs/muffs. Workers in Noise generating areas and engaged with noise generating machinery are subjected to audiometric tests annually. There are Regular noise checks by Decibel Meters to check for excessive noise in machineries.

A strict planned maintenance regime is followed meticulously to eradicate potential noise generating threats. Acoustic chambers are provided as and where required. The vibrating screens are facilitated with rubber and PU panels. Corrugated rubber liners at all transfer points have been provided. All the conveyors have been aided with Skirt Sealing and Rubber impact pads.


There are two no. of waste dumps in the mine. One is currently inactive and has been properly terraced and stabilized by planting around 24600 numbers of trees all along its slope area. The other one is active and dumping is progressing by Reatreating method. The slope of this active dump has also been stabilized by way of Miyawaki Plantation. Mainly amla, bamboo, imli and sheesham have been planted in this area with the survival rate of 76%. Garland drain and toe wall have been made around the dump and are being regularly maintained.

We are in agreement with M/s Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd, a group authorized by Central Pollution Control Board for management of hazardous waste. All hazardous waste containing oil like hoses, used filters, etc (Stream 5.2) are being disposed off in an impervious container provided by the party and this container when filled is being transported to their incineration facility, replacing a new container.

Apart from this all the used oil generated is being routed through the oil water separator tanks and the oil thus collected in barrels is sold to CPCB authorized agencies for treatment at their end. The washing bay of heavy machineries and the maintenance area have been laid by Epoxy paint so the no oil is allowed to contaminate the soil and all spillages are effectively collected.
The used batteries are being labeled and stacked at their earmarked places inside an impervious cool room and are later sold to authorized agencies.

Colored dustbins (Blue for Non Bio Degradable, Green for Bio-degradable & Red for paper waste) have been provided in the colony and office areas for effective segregation of waste. The biodegradable waste is the allowed for composting in Rolly-Polly composter for use as manure.
Bio-Medical waste are being segregated properly at the dispensary and such waste (used syringes, Expired Medicines, Used Cotton, etc) after Autoclaving are being disposed into an impervious pit for later treatment by authorized parties.

We encourage use of non-renewable sources of energy and make it into practice. Use of Solar water geyser, solar power fencing, Vergola Ventilators(non-electric), Translucent Roofing, Solar lighting, etc are few of our efforts toward sponsoring use of non renewal source of energy.

Breakthrough efforts have been made to conserve the fauna around the mining lease in association with the State Forest department. High LUX torch lights to ward of elephants have been distributed to the forest guards, Numerous Game tanks have been provided to carter drinking water of wild animals, Salt licks have been created at various locations inside the forest area to facilitate fauna growth. Solar Power fencing and Bio-Fencing has been provided at quarry top to prevent wild animals from falling into the working pit.
